Thoughts:

Dylan O’Brien was the reason to watch the Teen Wolf show and he made The Maze Runner YA trilogy worth watching. Was waiting to see where he would go with his career after his injuries on the set of one of the Maze Runner sequels. He is, essentially, a leading man for horror comedies. And he delivers all the goods playing a character coming of age in what you could argue is the last age of mankind.

His quest is naive but personal and that is what makes the journey worth it. Even though he lost his parents during the arrival of the monsters, he does not want to abandon the world to its fate. Add in great supporting cast members like Michael Rooker as the world-weary mentor and a young actress who is clearly a star on the rise,a real scene stealer in young Ariana Greenblatt as the arrow-wielding sidekick and the trio is complete.

The rest of the adventurers is rounded by a dog named Boy and a what looks like an iTunes robot called Mavis.

There is a lot of humor blended in between introducing another human gobbling mutant. The monsters are these transmogrified insects and reptiles . The warped toad is amazing. The “Boulder Snail” is a great addition. And the Tremors-like baddie that pursues the hero through the whole movie is a great horror creation called The Chumbler. There are also ravenous worm creatures called Sand Gobblers.

Worth the price of admission for a night in. Out now. On digital.
