A Deep Dive Into Aquatic Horror Cinema | Binge-Watchers Podcast

Introduction

Welcome to the Binge-Watchers Podcast! In this episode, we're taking a deep dive into aquatic horror cinema. Joining me, Johnny Spoiler, is the always fabulous Jordan Savage, our resident scream queen.

Summer Slash Five Horror Movie Festival

Before we get into the aquatic horror movies, we have some exciting news to share. This summer, we're hosting the fifth annual horror movie festival, Summer Slash! We have spine-chilling, bone-crunching, blood-curdling horror movies in store for you, including rediscovered classics like "Girls Night Out" and a sunken triple feature lineup with "The Deep House," "Underwater," and "Leviathan." Get ready to scream, jump, and maybe even puke a little.

Horror Movie Headlines

Before we dive into the movies, let's talk about some horror movie headlines. Art the Clown from the "Terrifier" movies is back in "Terrifier 3," and there's a new horror movie called "Suitable Flash" with horror royalty Barbara Crampton.

We also heard that the team behind "Ready or Not" is going to adapt a Universal monster movie.

Aquatic Horror Phobias

Before we get into "The Deep House," we wanted to talk about some aquatic horror phobias that tie into tonight's movies. Aquaphobia, thalassophobia, galliphobia, and megalohydrothalassophobia are all fears related to water, deep water, sharks, and large underwater creatures or objects.

Do you have any water-related fears or traumas?

Let us know in the comments.

The Deep House

Now, let's talk about "The Deep House." This movie follows YouTubers exploring a haunted house underwater. The house was built on a large grid and progressively plunged into a nine-meter deep water tank.

The actors and crew had to go six meters deep, which is very uncommon and difficult to ensure.

Underwater

Next up is "Underwater." After a mining accident on the sea floor, survivors have to crawl across to the safer mining location and get attacked by strange creatures in the deep. It's unclear if the creatures caused the accident, but they seem to be messing with the whole mining operation.

Leviathan

Last but not least, we have "Leviathan." This movie follows a mining crew encountering a mutant virus that starts mutating the crew under the sea. It's the gold standard for underwater horror movies and was even promoted with a Sea World vacation promo in 1989.

"It's only a podcast. Just keep telling yourself that. It's only a podcast."
