This was the third movie Paul Newman and Director George Roy Hill worked on together after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as well as the Best Picture winning The Sting.
Paul Newman has stated this was the most fun he's ever had making a movie and his favorite of his own movies to watch.
Many of the scenes with the Hanson Brothers were improvised and it was their own toy cars they were playing with in the hotel scene.
Many of the players in game scenes , including the Hanson Brothers, were actual players due the Johnstown Jets which the Chiefs were based on.
Steve Carlson, Jeff Carlson an David Hanson were all offered spin off movies but passed to focus on their hockey careers.
